Book Expo America is the largest gathering of publishers in the US each year. For the past five years, we've taken a group of self-published and aspiring authors who want their books to be picked up by established publishers...and with much success!
This year, BEA is in New York City, at the Jacob Javits Center on Wednesday and Thursday, May 26-27, 2010. And we are holding a half-day pre-BEA event on Tuesday, May 25 for a small group to prepare you to maximize your BEA experience and prepare you for pitching your project to publishers.
The half-day event at the Raddison Lexington, which is also one of the conference hotels. The rate for the hotel, through the BEA is $159 (www.BookExpoAmerica.com), so if you are serious about attending, book soon. The half-day pre-BEA prep event will take place from 1 pm to 5:30 pm on Tuesday, May 25 at the Raddison Lexington.
Beyond the special half-day event, we will be with you for both full days of the exhibition, with a booth so you will always have a place to come back to. This is a very large event, usually over 20,000 in attendance, so having a space to sit and to store your things will make your experience much easier. Jan King will be at the booth to coach you through each of your discussions with publishers and we will hold an evening debriefing session at the hotel on Wednesday night so you will get all the help and support you need to make the most of the event.
The fee for the half-day event, entrance into BEA for both days, for unlimited coaching and for the seminar and debriefing session is $498. The hotel and airfare (which is not included in the event price) are remarkably inexpensive right now. Attending Book Expo America when it is in New York gives you the best opportunity to meet acquisition editors and others because they don’t have to travel to attend.
Because we recommend that you prepare a book proposal to fully prepare for the event, a book proposal workbook/ebook, five hours of audio of all you need to know to successfully write your book proposal, sample proposals for books that sold at BEA AND unlimited telephone and email coaching with Jan King to prepare are all included in the one price.
Total price, including 2-day BEA admission is $498. Attendance is limited to 10 aspiring or self-published authors. A $166 nonrefundable deposit is required when you register and the balance in 2 additional equal payments with the balance due in full at the latest, on May 15, 2010. If you register after March 15, you must pay in full at the time of registration.
Within hours of your registration you will receive an invitation to a password-protected web site (www.bookproposals.ning.com) with all the preparation information you need so you can get started right away.
BEA Experience Testimonials
"Jan King has been a lifesaver on my publishing journey. Her support and expertise have been instrumental in helping me a land a great book deal with one of my top-choice publishers. Jan is extremely knowledgeable and provides valuable insights into all aspects of the publishing process – from crafting the book proposal to writing the manuscript, from navigating BEA to reviewing the contract, and so much more. I count on her for constructive feedback on my work, thoughtful answers to my questions, and sage advice every step of the way. She not only knows the ins-and-outs of the publishing industry, but she also gets the emotional ups and downs that come with writing a book. Her endless patience and encouragement keep me going. Hands down, Jan has been one of the best investments I’ve made in my business and I’ve recommended her to many friends and colleagues. If you’re an entrepreneurial woman wanting to get published, Jan will help you make that dream come true."

"I attended Book Expo America with Jan King in 2008 and as a result of her expert coaching (and a lot of hard work), I landed the book contract I wanted with my top choice of publishers. Jan helped me to understand the book contract so that I could negotiate what would work for me. She was very accessible and we talked strategy at many points throughout the process." –Adrian Ott, author, The 24-Hour Customer: New Rules for Winning in a Time-Starved, Always-Connected Economy (HarperCollins, 2010)
“I just wanted to formally thank both of you for all that you did to help us this last weekend. I had such a great time and everything that happened wouldn't have been possible without the wonderful class and resources you both put together. You thought of every little detail from warning us to wear comfortable shoes, to treats and water at the booth, to having experts talk to us about pitching and negotiating, etc. It was truly an amazing weekend and I'm so excited to see what becomes of it for all that were present! –Carrie Silver-Stock, author, The Secrets Girls Keep (HCI Press, 2009)
